I was about six weeks into my poly journey, and I’d already had my heart broken once. What can I say, I move quickly!
It was about a week and a half after that heartbreak when I got a message on a dating app from a new guy, Romeo.
Romeo came in HOT. In his very first message to me he said that when he looked at my profile picture, it made him want to write me love letters until I fall in love with him. I was so amused that I had to reward his boldness with a response.
In my mind, it wasn’t going to be anything. He was obviously a goofball, and most likely just playing around. But I said hi, because why not.
Our conversation was pretty amazing from the start, and we quickly developed a strong rapport and comfort level. I gave him my number within a few hours, and we’ve talked on and off every day since then—which was five days ago, at of the time of this writing. (Edit: at the time of this posting, we’ve been dating for two and a half weeks.)
We set up a date for the next night, and picked a place to meet about halfway between us since we live a little over an hour apart. As expected, it went very well. We hit it off and had great conversation, and ended the night with fooling around in my car. On my way home, feelings were brewing, hard!
The next day, he made a playlist for us and shared it with me. We’ve both been adding songs to it since then. The first song, and the name of the playlist, is I Dare You, by the Regrettes. My favorite lyric, which he also texted to me, was: “You’re gonna fall and I’ll catch you.” Every time I hear the song now, I get butterflies.
Somehow, he knew from the start that I was going to fall for him, and he wasn’t shy telling me that he’s here for it. He wanted it to happen, and he was going to do everything he could to make sure it would.
Later that night, he had to drive through my town on his way home from an errand late at night, so we made plans for him to come over and meet Hubby and spend more time with me. We were all a little nervous, but the introduction went great. It was the first time any of my metamours met each other, and something I had been looking forward to for a while! I can already tell that they’re going to get along really well, and that is very important to me. I am also extremely excited to meet his wife, and for us to meet each other’s kids. I have big dreams of our families becoming really close and spending lots of time together.
After the introduction, Hubby went to bed and I had time alone with Romeo. That time we had was truly mind-blowing and incredibly surreal. It was intense and romantic and ecstatic and heart-pounding and indescribable. I wanted him to stay forever. Of course, he had to go home and I had to go to bed eventually, but when he left, I almost said I loved him right then and there. I stopped myself, because that seemed way too cray-cray.
In the two days since then, my feelings have continued to skyrocket. I can say with confidence that I love him now.
Describing how I feel about him is almost impossible to do accurately. There really aren’t words to make sense of it. I feel like our souls recognize each other. I feel like he’s mine and he’s always been mine, I just didn’t know it until now. And when I say “mine” I don’t mean “my only.” I don’t mean that he’s a replacement for Hubby in any way, shape, or form. I don’t mean I own him or have any right to him. He is free to leave at any time, as am I. As me and Hubby are, even though we never would. As all people should be.
But I certainly don’t want him to leave. I want him to keep me, forever.
Looking back at my recent heartbreak, I remember the love that I felt for Jonah. For him, I felt totally captivated and tender and very attracted. At the height of my love for him, I felt content to love him even without receiving it back just because I felt that he deserved it and I wanted to be the one to give him that love. (I explain more about this in my post specifically about him.)
But with Romeo, that love I had for Jonah sort of looks like child’s play. It looks like a cute, schoolgirl crush. I know that it was more than that, I do. But with Romeo, this is a soul-crushing, in-my-bones, NEED for him. It’s a love that I never, ever want to lose.
Within a matter of days, my world has flipped upside down and I found a treasure I had no idea was waiting for me. I found a BIG love. I feel so, so incredibly lucky. How is this real life? I don’t quite know, but I am enjoying every moment of it.
